The Italian cabinet, which met in L'Aquila today, gave the go ahead to a proposal put forward by Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi to shift the upcoming G8 Summit from the island of La Maddalena, in Sardinia, to Abruzzo. This is a major sign of the determination to impart a fresh boost to areas struck by the earthquake on 6 April.  The Prime Minister himself confirmed the move in the course of a news conference held on the sidelines of the cabinet meeting.

The cabinet met in the Finance Police barracks in Coppito, where the National Civil Protection Department's command and control centre has established its base for handling and coordinating aid for the local people hit by the earthquake.
